A day hike to Mushkpuri, the second-highest peak in the Galiyat region at 2,800 meters (9,200 ft), is a perfect escape into the serene mountains — ideal for both beginners and seasoned hikers. Whether you start from Murree/Bhurban or make the journey from Rawalpindi/Islamabad, the hike offers a wonderful blend of natural beauty, fresh mountain air, and rewarding views — all within a single day.
From Murree or Bhurban, the drive to the trailhead at Dunga Gali takes just under an hour, passing through pine-clad hills and charming mountain villages. Those starting from Rawalpindi/Islamabad can reach Dunga Gali in about 2.5–3 hours via the Murree Expressway and Abbottabad Road, making it an easily accessible day trip.
The hike begins at Dunga Gali, where a clearly marked trail leads through enchanting pine, oak, and cedar forests. The air is crisp and cool, and the scent of pine accompanies you as you ascend. The trail is about 4 kilometers one way and moderately easy, making it suitable for families and casual hikers as well. Along the way, you’re treated to sweeping views of the valleys below, colorful wildflowers in spring and summer, and a magical golden canopy in autumn. During winter, the trail is often covered in snow, creating a dreamy, quiet landscape.
As you approach the top, the forest gives way to a grassy meadow with panoramic views of the surrounding hills and valleys. On a clear day, you might even catch a glimpse of the mighty Nanga Parbat in the distance. The summit of Mushkpuri is an ideal spot to relax, take photographs, and enjoy a picnic surrounded by nature.
