Hidden in the emerald folds of Azad Kashmir, a day excursion to Keran and Upper Neelum Valley offers an unforgettable journey from Muzaffarabad, just a few hours’ drive along one of the most scenic mountain roads in Pakistan. This region is a sanctuary of natural beauty, flanked by pine forests, glacial streams, and panoramic views of the snow-draped Himalayan peaks. The route itself is a visual feast, winding through lush hillsides dotted with wildflowers and quaint stone houses, with frequent glimpses of the turquoise Neelum River weaving its way through the valley.
The journey begins with a gradual ascent alongside the Neelum River, where travelers are treated to striking views of terraced fields, cascading waterfalls, and charming roadside villages. The first major stop, Keran, is a serene hamlet perched on the riverbank, offering breathtaking views across the Line of Control into Indian-administered Kashmir. Here, visitors can stroll by the riverside, capture the rustic charm of traditional Kashmiri wooden homes, or simply unwind at a teahouse while sipping fragrant Kashmiri Kehwa, paired with freshly baked cornbread and pan-fried trout caught locally.
As the road climbs further into Upper Neelum, the landscape grows even more mesmerizing. The village, often veiled in early morning mist, provides elevated views of the Neelum Valley, where thick pine forests and alpine meadows stretch endlessly. In summer (May–September), wild roses and daisies paint the hillsides in vivid colors, while in winter, thick snow transforms the scenery into a magical, storybook landscape.
The day excursion to Keran and Upper Neelum Valley is ideal for light hiking, nature photography, riverside picnics, and friendly interactions with hospitable locals. Traditional Kashmiri meals can be enjoyed at small guesthouses and dhabas, where dishes like Gushtaba, saag with Makki ki Roti, Rajma chawal, and grilled trout offer a true taste of the region’s culinary heritage.
