Hidden in the emerald folds of Azad Kashmir, Keran and Upper Neelum Valley offer an unforgettable day excursion from Muzaffarabad, just a few hours’ drive along one of the most scenic mountain roads in Pakistan. This region is a sanctuary of natural beauty, flanked by pine forests, glacial streams, and panoramic views of the snow-draped Himalayan peaks.
The journey begins with a winding ascent along the Neelum River, where travelers are treated to striking views of terraced fields, waterfalls, and the shimmering blue of the river. The first major stop, Keran, is a peaceful hamlet perched on the riverbank, offering breathtaking views across the Line of Control into Indian-administered Kashmir. Visitors can enjoy a riverside walk, take photos of the classic wooden houses, or relax at a local teahouse sipping Kashmiri Kehwa with freshly made cornbread and trout.
Continuing higher into Upper Neelum, the scenery becomes even more mesmerizing. This village, often shrouded in mist, offers elevated views of the valley, with pine-covered slopes stretching as far as the eye can see. During summer (May–September), the landscape bursts with color—wildflowers bloom, forests turn vibrant green, and the cool air is filled with birdsong. In winter, snow blankets the rooftops and forests, giving it a magical, fairytale charm.
The day excursion offers opportunities for light hiking, nature photography, river-side picnics, and warm conversations with locals. Traditional Kashmiri meals are available at guesthouses and roadside Dhabas, with dishes like Gushtaba, Saag with Makki ki Roti, and Grilled trout.
