Strategically located at the crossroads of South Asia, Pakistan is a unique and blessed state full of surprises like no other country in the world. With the diverse landscape from the northernmost rugged Himalayan mountains and glaciers to the wetlands and serene beaches of the Arabian Sea; the country is enormously wealthy in history and scenic natural beauty, ethnic and cultural diversity, and architectural and archaeological heritage

Historically the land making up today’s Pakistan has for centuries been home to some of the ancient civilizations of the world. A journey through the history of Pakistan outlines the significance and richness of this land featuring thousands of years of historic places and events testimony to the existence of ancient civilizations. The legacy has passed through different empires and left a mark that makes this country alluring. The discovery of the 9000 years old Neolithic Mehrgarh civilization in the Baluchistan province of Pakistan, the 5000 years old Bronze Age highly developed Indus Valley civilization in the Sindh and Punjab provinces, and the 3000 years old Buddhist Gandhāra Civilization mostly in KPK province, were the major civilizations made an exceptional mark on this land. The conquest of Alexander the Great, the Mauryan Empire, the invasion of Muhammad Bin Qasim, the 16th-century glorious Mughal era, the succeeding Sikh rule period and finally the British rule have all played a significant role in history before it became a separate state in the name of Pakistan in 1947.

The Islamic Republic of Pakistan today is the 33rd largest country covering 881,913 square kilometres (340,509 square miles) and is the world’s 6th most populous country housing more than 220 million people. Pakistan comprises four provinces (Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) and three territories (the capital city of Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu & Kashmir). The country is bordered by India to the east, China to the northeast, Afghanistan to the north & northwest, Iran to the east & southeast, and the 1046 km coastline of the Arabian Sea in the south.

Stretching from the galaxy of mighty glaciated mountain ranges and deep-rooted glaciers in the northern Gilgit-Baltistan region to the hot & hospitable desert plains and serene coastal beaches in the south, the diverse landscape of Pakistan is abundant in fascinating tourist attractions including natural beauty, historic monuments, cultural and ethnic diversity, variety of traditional foods, and manmade attractions.

The mountain regions of Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral, making up the westernmost edge of the Great Himalayas, is home to some of the world’s highest mountains and longest glaciers known as a heaven for adventure lovers. The Karakoram Highway, the main trade and tourism artery connecting China and Pakistan at Khunjerab Pass, known as the eighth wonder of the world is embellished with a variety of attractions including thousands of petroglyphs, rock carvings, and inscriptions; towering mountains and deep-rooted long glaciers outside the polar region; waterfalls, gushing rivers, and serene lakes; and terraced valleys, traditional settlements, and historic forts. The central territories of the country house some unique landmarks including the Harappa civilization, Gandhara civilization, the glorious art and architecture from the Islamic era, the alluring Mughal heritage, Sikh era architecture and Gothic British architecture besides dense forests, vast deserts, and fertile lands. Its southern region constituting Sindh and Baluchistan make up some famous archaeological sites, glorious landmarks, bird sanctuaries, and some of the world’s best golden beaches stretching along the coastal line.
