Hidden in the peaceful heights above Muzaffarabad, Srikot is a serene mountain village that promises an unforgettable day retreat for nature lovers, cultural explorers, and those seeking peace far from the noise of the city. Deriving its name from the Kashmiri words “siri” (top) and “kot” (village), Srikot truly lives up to its name as a “village at the top.” Perched at the end of a scenic trail beyond Shaheed Gali, a day excursion to Srikot from Muzaffarabad is the most recommended. It offers some of the most mesmerizing vistas in Azad Kashmir.
The journey to Srikot begins with a short drive to Shaheed Gali, a small hamlet. It is located approximately 16 km west of Muzaffarabad at an elevation of 1,640 meters. From there, a 7-kilometer trek (or a rugged jeep ride for the adventurous) leads through dense pine forests and ridgelines to the quiet village of Srikot. Along the way, travelers are treated to sweeping views of Muzaffarabad city, forested mountain slopes, and the occasional stream cascading through the hills.
Upon reaching Srikot, visitors are greeted by natural splendor—lush terraced fields, tall deodar and pine trees, and panoramic backdrops of the distant Himalayas. The climate is refreshingly cool year-round, and the tranquil atmosphere is only heightened by the genuine warmth of the local people. Many residents are eager to share tea, stories, or simply a smile with those passing through.
The village and its surroundings are ideal for light hiking, birdwatching, photography, and meditative walks along quiet forest trails. Natural springs, traditional wooden homes, and time-worn mosques highlight the cultural richness of the area. In spring and summer (April to October), wildflowers bloom and the forests are lush green, while in winter (December to February), snow blankets the landscape, transforming Srikot into a fairytale-like retreat.
Accommodations are limited only with a rest house available at Shaheed Gali. A day excursion to Srikot from Muzaffarabad is enough to enjoy the best that Srikot has to offer—raw beauty, cultural authenticity, and soul-soothing silence.
